Is my Residential Project Suitable for a Heat Pump System?
For a ground source heat pump system, you will need outside space; about twice the surface area of the property. If you have a lake or pond, a water source may be the solution or consider an air source heat pump system if you don’t have the space, don’t want to re-landscape or you live in an urban area.
The level of insulation will also impact energy efficiency offered by a heat pump system.
Properties which have high energy efficiency standards are ideal for the installation of heat pumps.
Your current heating and hot water source also has an effect on the financial rewards of renewable heat systems. For example, if you are replacing an electric, liquid gas or solid fuel system with a heat pump, the financial benefits are likely to be reasonably high.
If you are considering replacing the gas boiler in your property, a heat pump system may be slightly more expensive to run unless particular attention is paid to ensuring maximum efficiency of the heat pump in the heating system by using best practice radiator / underfloor heating design. However, if gas prices continue to go up, as expected, heat pumps will become the cheapest as well as the lowest carbon form of heating available.

Braunstone Town Council5 StarHex installed an Air Source Heat Pump in one of our Community Centres. Their tender was both competitive and thorough with a detailed breakdown of monthly heat & hot water generation, details of ASHP capacity. They pointed out that we may not need the new gas boiler and how they could link the system to our existing. The Joule cylinder recommended is a good cylinder combining thermal storage and hot water generation/storage, helping to protect the building heating from ASHP defrost cycles. They recommended variable speed pumps, reducing ongoing costs. Their tender was a very competitive, high quality response which the Council was more than happy to go with.
Hex worked closely with us on the finer detail, including with our architect on the location of the external fans.
At installation, we were not disappointed. The onsite team worked with us to avoid disruption to the users of the Community Centre, which included the need to retain hot water for a branch GP Surgery located within the building.
Overall we are very happy with the installation, which is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of the building by around 60% and save 40% on our energy bills.Wednesday 4th October 2023

We got a response to our email asking if they could help us very quickly and efficiently. The engineer came on time and spent about 2 hours to check our system.
