Improving the Island’s highway network

The Island’s road network is being upgraded at an unprecedented rate by Island Roads under the Highways PFI.

Since 2013, we have rebuilt or resurfaced over 559 kilometres of highway Islandwide from the busiest main road to the quieter rural roads.  We are also responsible for the maintenance and management of this constantly improving network, undertaking functions including winter maintenance, street sweeping, amenity grass cutting, verge maintenance, gulley cleansing and operating the CCTV network.

It is the largest engineering project ever undertaken on the Island and as well as making major highway improvements, we are also boosting the economy by creating jobs and millions of pounds worth of trade for scores of local businesses.

With around 200 Island employees, we are also active in supporting the local community through our volunteer programme and also the Isle of Wight Foundation – made up of partners behind the PFI – which has donated around nearly half a million pounds to local good causes.

This website contains information on the Highways PFI, the work we have undertaken and what remains to be done. There are also many functions you can perform on line such as viewing current works on the road network and reporting defects such as potholes. You can also find answers to some of the questions most frequently asked about the project.

We also provide regular updates about our work and other traffic issues as they happen via our Twitter feed. Please follow us @IslandRoads

In order to give an overview of the project, why it is needed and what benefits it is bringing, we have also produced a short information film which you can view above.

If you have any comments or queries about our service then please contact us on [email protected] or via telephone 01983 822440.

Little apparent understanding. Always seem to say: " Not our responsibility", or they disregard information about road signage after a so-called follow up. Road sign faults not accepted or corrected. Often states that the road fault is the IWCC responsibility - no explanation of this on their website

After the recent strong winds which hit the island, I reported a tree over a local cycle path where I walk with my dog daily. Within the hour, this tree was being dealt with. Amazing service. Thank you so much.

They have just finished our road. The Team were very helpful and professional at all times. Always ready to help is in and out of the road when safe to do so. It can't be easy working in the heat and wearing all the safety gear they have to wear. However, they remained cheerful and professional at all times. Well done Island Roads.
